Explore handpan scales and design playable note layouts
Explore handpan layouts before playing or designing one. Compare scales and arrange tone fields to make melodic patterns easier to reach.
Key idea
A handpan layout gives a scale a physical arrangement. The note collection determines available pitches; their placement influences which melodic gestures and alternating-hand patterns are convenient.
Try this first
Choose a root and scale, then play the central ding followed by the surrounding tone fields. Try a short melody using neighboring fields. Compare another arrangement and notice how the same scale can suggest different playing gestures.
How to get started
- Choose a scale and the number of tone fields, including bottom fields if desired.
- Tap fields to hear their notes. Edit a field’s pitch or arrangement to shape your layout.
- Compare top and bottom views, then save a layout to revisit it from the library.
Explore a little further
Try another experiment
Choose three notes and repeat a short phrase. Keep the scale but compare another layout. Notice how the same musical idea invites a different path between tone fields.
Good to know
This is a layout and listening tool. A virtual arrangement does not establish whether a physical handpan can be built, tuned or played with that exact geometry.
