Explore musical scales, chords and their shapes
Learn a scale by hearing it, playing its chords and seeing the same notes across different diagrams. Use it for exploration, practice or composition.
Key idea
A scale is an ordered pattern of intervals from a root. Transposing keeps that pattern while changing its starting pitch. Chords built from the scale reveal another way to hear the same collection of notes.
Try this first
Start with C Major (Ionian). Find C, D, E, F, G, A and B on the keyboard, then compare their positions on the circle and semitone grid. Change the root to D: the interval pattern stays the same while the notes change.
How to get started
- Choose a root note and search for a scale.
- Play the highlighted notes and compare the available visualizations.
- Explore Scale Harmony to hear chords built from the selected scale.
Explore a little further
Try another experiment
Compare C Major (Ionian) with A Minor (Aeolian). They share the same pitch classes, but a different tonic changes which notes and chords feel like home. End a short phrase on each tonic and listen.
