Learn note locations on piano and guitar

Learn where notes are on an instrument, connect letter names with solfège, and practice moving by tones and semitones.

Key idea

A note name identifies a pitch class, while its octave identifies a register. The same note name occurs in multiple places. Piano and guitar organize those repeated pitches in different spatial patterns.

Try this first

Practice finding C on the piano before changing instruments or adding accidentals. Then compare the letter names with Do–Re–Mi. A note can occur in several octaves or positions: use the instrument diagram to connect the repeated name with its location.

How to get started

  1. Choose the instrument and an available practice level.
  2. Locate the requested note on the diagram and check the feedback.
  3. Practice tones and semitones as your confidence grows.

Try another experiment

Locate the same note in several positions before moving to a new note. Compare the pattern on piano with guitar. Say the note name aloud, then check it using the other naming system.
