Compass & Ruler

Construct geometry with a digital compass and ruler

Practice geometric construction with points, lines and circles and their intersections. Grow regular polygons from a fixed side; all their sides and angles remain equal.

Key idea

A construction uses geometric relationships rather than approximate appearance. A compass preserves a radius; a straight line connects points. Their intersections let you build new points from constraints you already know.

Try this first

Draw a line between two points and use it as one fixed side of a regular polygon. Drag to choose the direction and number of sides, then inspect the result. Add circles or intersections to continue the construction.

How to get started

  1. Pick the compass or ruler tool.
  2. Tap points to draw circles and lines.
  3. Build classic constructions step by step.

Try another experiment

Draw a segment and circles centered on its endpoints, each with a radius equal to the segment. Connect an intersection to both endpoints to form an equilateral triangle. Compare this with a regular triangle made using the polygon tool.
