Tune sustained notes with a visual pitch meter and strobe

Tune sustained notes against your chosen reference and temperament. Compare the pitch meter and strobe while adjusting your instrument.

Key idea

A cent is one hundredth of an equal-tempered semitone. A tuner compares a measured pitch with a target under the selected reference and tuning system. A4 sets that reference; it is not the note you must always play.

Try this first

Select your reference pitch and instrument preset, then play one sustained note. Let the initial attack settle before adjusting the instrument. Compare the pitch indicator with the strobe and listen as you approach the chosen reference.

How to get started

  1. Choose the reference pitch, temperament and instrument preset you want to tune to.
  2. Start listening, allow microphone access and play one steady note at a time.
  3. Adjust your instrument until the pitch indicator is centered or the strobe appears still. Recheck after the initial attack of the note.

Explore a little further

Try another experiment

Sustain a steady note and compare the pitch meter with the strobe. Make a small tuning adjustment and wait for the reading to settle. Repeat with the same reference rather than changing the target between comparisons.

Good to know

Pitch estimates depend on the microphone, room noise and stability of the note. Check the selected temperament and reference before interpreting a reading as sharp or flat.
